Kaiser Chiefs

Off With Their Heads

Kaiser deriders – statistically you’re more likely to be one than ginger or over six feet tall – traditionally point to the band’s shameless success-grasping as the basis of their scorn. They note that their desire to sell as many albums as Blur is more fervent than their (considerable) yearning to emulate their legacy. It’s a valid, if old, criticism. Kaiser Chiefs’ pre-signing tactic of ensuring that every song played for three-men-and-a-dog audiences contained record contract-typing earworms is still here, but now serves to cement their position in the top echelon of Big British Bands.

‘Off With Their Heads’, rather than being a brave leap forward after surviving the second album spike-trap with the solid ‘Yours Truly, Angry Mob’, is a purposeful push on the accelerator with zero desire to change lanes. It’s not an album to be remembered. But it does contain choruses that are impossible not to. Opener ‘Spanish Metal’ recalls the spikier end of The Coral’s early delvings, but it’s lead single ‘Never Miss A Beat’ that first harpoons the ear. Ricky Wilson derides broken Britain with one wagging finger (“What did you do today?/I did nothing”) while leading a fist-pump with the other over skewering Britpop guitar. It’d be flawless if not for one line: the Jamie’s School Dinners-referencing “What do you want for tea?/I want crisps”, that induced more guffaws across Britain than the first series of The Office.

‘Never…’ survives, but ‘Addicted To Drugs’ is that most frustrating of things – an ace stompalong rendered unlistenable by woeful lyrics, Wilson’s ‘twist’ on Robert Palmer causing cringes despite it helming the most winning hook on the album. Speaking of cringe, Lily Allen is unrecognisable on the Grange Hill-esque ‘Always Happens Like That’, not because she’s ditched her nonchalant smarm for Beyoncé-like warblings, but because producer Mark Ronson has mixed her dormouse-low. Better is the jittery, anthemic ‘Like It Too Much’ and the Nick Hodgson-sung, Lennon-aping closer ‘Remember You’re A Girl’ – certainly more so than the Boney M-barrassing keyboard hops of ‘Good Days Bad Days’, which may be half-knowingly cheesy but still go down like a fistful of Stilton. Half-knowing, half-full of anthems and lyrically halfway to hell, ‘Off With Their Heads’ is musically halfway there. Kaisers have barely missed a beat on the highway to massive-dom, but they’re hardly raising our heart rates.

I expected that it would be bad but I didn't think it would be this bad!! God the amount of arrogance that band has is annoying aswell "We're the band to take Oasis off the mantle" "Everything is Average" if there is a band that epitomizes the words average and predictable then it's them. I could almost predict every hook 10 seconds before it was executed. I don't get why this band was that popular in the first place. I mean their first album was Ok but way overrated the second was bad but this one takes bad to a different level... very bad

Lazy, complacent effort, both Kaisers and Ronson, these guys will be living off the handful of decent songs from the 1st album for the foreseeable future.

they cant they just go away for a few years? yet another festival season with them hogging the headline slots. yes they are a good festival band but theres been no break of this band in 4 years.

possibly the worst band to ever have released a record in the last 10 years. Appalling lyrics. mediocre musicianship, shamelessly forced 'good-vibes' leaves an after-taste of un-ignorable gloom. horrible band.

Oct 13, 2008

Get rid of them and the Pigeon Detectives. Shockingly poor bands. Quims

Typical mum/dad band. Talentless, geeky, overrated tools! Why leave it only 18 months before releasing another album, talk about being desparate.

i thought it was very amusing when they said thay were more or less better than oasis, the silly plonkers it takes a lot of balls to claim your better than oasis but that was just plain silly! evry thing about this band is just plain silly, music and lyrics...they are just a poor mans blur and blur wernt that good either

Gawd i made the awful mistake of buying this. What a shit album, it seems they think they can just churn out rubbish now, knowing that idiots like me will buy it. Its mega unfair they get to sell out wembly arena, whilst top bands like the cribs struggle to sell out brixton accademy, FUCK THE KAISERS, thats the new catchprashe people.

I'm no fan of this band,,why would i be,they are a bad rendition of Blur,When Ricky tried to end his feud with Oasis last week it couldn't have been more significant! Here's a band so overrated my kids from the scene!they say oasis are an indie kids band, well oasis came in the wake of Nirvana and The Stone Roses demise...both legends irrsepective of opinion. This album is rubbish, and Mark Ronson wants to get some identity,i mean what is he?a producer?a solo artist?a DJ?Amy Winehouse' sidekick???As 4 better that Oasis???as rick 13 says(nice one mate)they are plonkers it takes more than 3 shit albums to have an opinion on band like oasis who have sold over 50 million records and been going over 15 years!!!Kaisers...go get a job in the hospitalty dept at Elland Rd,i hear the service has dwindeled since you have languished in the lower leagues...

When will this band just fuck off? Surely they don't have any fans? How could anyone like them? Terrible lyrics, poor musicianship, appaling live performances. Horrid band, please go away now.

Oct 14, 2008

is this a joke giving this album 5/10??? should be 0/10 i find this band vile and very offensive that some of the british public like this band and dont get me started on the oasis thing...at least you can put oasis in the same breath as the beatles, rolling stones, the who, the jam, the smiths because they are all legends...u cant exactly do that with the kaisers now can u...maybe the same breath as dexys midnight runners, chumbawumba, black lace, robbie williams, A1 or even bucks fizz cos there all quite silly

Oct 15, 2008

This band need something original, it's more of the same. It pretty much is a prime example of the massive flurry of average bands that don't make good records for very long (Good debut, average shite second). The Fratellis, Hard-Fi, the Kooks, the Pigeon Detectives...Kaiser Chiefs are next. A bad Blur as Liam Gallagher had put it.

2 be honest these guys are good life but i think there last 2 albums have been FUCKING SHITE its all about Oasis at the Moment Dig out ur Souls fellow NME guys!!!!!!!!

RealMode

Oct 15, 2008

let's be honest, this is not very timeless band. so don't worry about them. What worries me more is Pink on Top Charts. SO WHAT is one of the dullest songs with absolutely horrible and childish video. IS THIS WORLD GOING CRAZY?

Gerbalism

Oct 15, 2008

lmao @ RealMode, mate, why do you care who is top of the charts? It's been dominated by school girls for years, so Pink should be at the top of the charts as that's all she appeals to! Even Sex on Fire is as commercial as they come, my 6 year old niece loves it! Anyway, back to the Kaisers, my girlfriends mum likes them but she also likes scissor sisters just as much, nuff said!

Oct 16, 2008

Like someone said earlier they are a very good festival band, and this rush release is so that they dont get forgoten. They should do what klaxons and kasabian have done and have time off.

jobailey91

Oct 16, 2008

This is probably suicide, but i'm taking this opportunity to say that i don't think the album was that bad. I've had 'Good Days Bad Days' in my head for ages, i love singing it. 'You Want History' is great, 'Never Miss A Beat' is ok, and 'Remember You're A Girl' is surprisingly touching and a perfect "pretty" song to end the album with. So far it hasn't matched up to Yours Truly Angry Mob yet, but i'm perfectly willing to show some faith and give it time...

zoodude

Oct 16, 2008

It's not a bad album but it's not a good one either. It's just a Kaiser Chiefs album.

04bootd

Oct 17, 2008

What? Am i hearing right? This album is the same as the rest, you got that bit right - its bloody amazing! And all those who think the Kaiser Chiefs are "tools" need to go and see them live.

shaunyeah

Oct 17, 2008

whats happening to music when these people are at the forefront of the british rock scene, they don't even know how to use their instruments properly!

Golfman

Oct 17, 2008

Blimey, must be most of the Oasis fans in here slagging off the Kaisers. Why dont you all just jog on in your Stone Islands. Like it or not, the Kaisers are extremely popular, are actually extremely talented and are nice people who dont pretend to be tough guys.

Gerbalism

Oct 17, 2008

I think all the people bigging up the Kaisers really need to listen to more music. And golfman, is that a joke about them being talented? My dead gran could play their chord structures, and have a of read their fecking lyrics too!

dohertyandtherascals

Oct 17, 2008

i like kaiser chiefs!! i dont really rate oasis!! but i understand that others mite do, so i just leave them be! plus i went to see them live at elland road and manchester they are brilliant, cum on how many lead singers dive into the crowd and hide for about 5 mins!! i dont see liam doing that!

Golfman

Oct 17, 2008

Theres another Stone Island wearer. ha ha

Soundedd

Oct 17, 2008

Golfman is probably the best member on here along with hness. Kaiser Chiefs are a quality band. I remember them lighting up my year 11 at school back in 2006 when me and my mates first heard them. I remember someone teaching me the lyrics to Everyday I Love You Less and less in an English lesson. About time they got some praise, nice chaps, good musicians and all round lovely lads, I'll be buying the album on Monday :) Havn't you lot got anything better to do than slag them off, I get home from work and don't expect to read this!! You know what I like Oasis and Kaiser Chiefs!! I saw Oasis on Monday and I'm seeing the Chiefs for the second time in February, quality band, Never Miss A Beat, You Want History and Like It Too Much, i.e the three i've heard from the new album are awsome, but hey i'm just a kid who likes music so you know :)

lemoncakelet

Oct 20, 2008

This sudden Kaiser Chiefs backlash is absolutely ridiculous. Just because they've become famous and shamelessly popular doesn't mean they're not good anymore. There are some absolutely brilliant songs on this record. Good Days Bad Days, Tomato In The Rain, Addicted To Drugs, You Want History - all classic Kaiser Chiefs high quality pop songs which are catchy, intelligent, witty and plain superb. Probably they're best album to date and, in my opinion, shows just a glimmer of what Kaiser Chiefs have to offer.

I've downloaded this album off limewire bout two weeks ago [ im still buying it] and its fucking amazing!most of you who've commented here are probably 43 year old men who listen to oasis cos it makes you feel a bit young and hip and so just jump on the bandwagon of slagging kaisers off theyve made a cracking album and are a cracing band, yeah the songs have a similar sound, but i dont remeber anyone complaining about that when arctic monkeys did it on whatever people say,....blimmin pathetic, their a good english band with good lyrics about england

soundedd 'havent you got anything better to do than to slag them off' this coming from the person who slas every band off apart from oasis, kaiser chiefs and arctic monkeys! this album is gonna be shit! never miss a beat is the shittest song from them yet the lyrics i beleive were written by an 8 year old kid who likes crisps for his tea!

Gerbalism

Oct 20, 2008

Why do people keep talking about Oasis, they're crap as well, they haven' had a decent album out in over a decade. Most of you have a serious lack of taste in music!

Soundedd

Oct 21, 2008

Skimpi, I'll have you know my music collection ranges from Queen to Glasvegas and Led Zeppelin to Elbow, I've even got Michael Buble!! Anyway bought this today, fabulous album lets hope they beat AC/DC to the British Number One Spot :D

How can u possibly gve this album a five!!!!!!!!!!!its worth at least a 7!Spanish metal is rubbish but the rest is class!!

Boycie06

Oct 21, 2008

Iv not heard their new album so Im not going to slag it off, but Iv felt even since when they first came out that 2 things stood out. Firstly how poor a singer that Ricky bloke is, and secondly (admittedly more their 2nd album and this new crisps single) how poor they're lyrics are. That angry mob song was the most childish chorus ever. If there is a hidden deeper message they aint getting it across. The Oasis thing is ridiculous. Ricky pretends to hate it all but really I'd imagine he's delighted anytime Noel/Liam mentions them as their interviews tend to be all over this website and thousands more across the globe giving the kaisers loadsa publicity. They are leagues apart as bands though lets be serious. Stone Island wearers or Waistcoat wearers it doesnt matter the facts are there. I also hate the fact hes seens as a great frontman, his already poor singing is hampered by his continual jumping about etc, he cant keep his cool and is like an over excited tubby kid bouncing about. Look at for example Brandon Flowers who covers just as much of the stage as him in a set but

Soundded if you like the Kaiser Chiefs and Keane then you cannot claim to like music....I've seen em live when they supported the Cribs at new yr and they were awful...truly awful

Soundedd

Oct 21, 2008

its_rudimentary, music is about opinion. I've seen the Chiefs live and I thinkthey are brilliant as is the new album, thats just my opinion. The cribs are a terrible band, the reason Kaiser Chiefs sell more than the cribs is their better, simple as!!!! I know I know I couldn't give a monkeys about sales either, but it's the only way to get my point across to people like you! What on earth are the Chiefs doing supporting the cribs anyway :|

Gerbalism

Oct 21, 2008

I'm sorry, did you just say the kaisers are better than the cribs??? What fucking planet are you on??? You have really proven that you don't have a fucking clue about music, prepare for a bashing!

maggielin

Oct 22, 2008

Please, Gerbalism, this is truly childish. Music is about opinion (and not solely yours, mind you), as someone already pointed out. My opinion happens to be that the Kaisers are one of the best live bands around, and that they have such an amount of humour and sarcasm in their lyrics that nobody can call them "simple" and "stupid". Off with ... really grows on you, if you just let it. But listening to music as prejudiced as you are, I guess you never give anything or anyone a second chance, so have fun with your Cribs (whose singer is a pretty arogant man, unless he is making fun of himself extremely badly)

how can this band be so popular????terrible music, terrible lyrics

its_rudimentary

Oct 22, 2008

Record sales do not mean your good you fool...by that measure Robson and Jerome are a classic act. Kaiser Chiefs make albums for middle aged mums to buy in sainsbury's, thats why they sell records. Inside a couple of years they will be gone for ever and employment will be finally quite apt since thats what they will need.

..........utter dogshit, sooo please that AC/DC wiped the floor sales-wise, no competion really....how the fuck can you seriously get away with a line like "what do you want for tea/i want crisps". ????....when i heard it i honestly thought i was tripping, was it not suppose to be a joke that they forgot to take out while mixing ???

Soundedd

Nov 4, 2008

its_rudimentary, learn what the word "opinion" means, same with you Gerbalism. By the way I think the Cribs are awful, nearly as bad as that pilloc Angus Young and his awful band AC/DC. Did you know AC/DC means Bisexual. Homosexual album, bisexual fans if you ask me, its_rudimentary would look good in Angus' outfit, actually he probably lent it him haha :)

Nov 6, 2008

i havent heard the album but the never miss a beat song is shockingly bad!! there are a lot of bad bands out there and these guys are up there with them. Mark Ronson? That guy needs to get run over by a bus! He is a pointless celebrity twat. I see enough of this knob in the papers, I dont want to listen to the dribble the "super producer" (laughable) produces too! Fuck off!!!!!!

musicgirl650

Nov 10, 2008

I am a fan of the Chiefs and have seen them live several times, and I am NOT a middle aged mum or over six foot tall or even ginger. But I am a full time pro musician. The album in my opinion, (please note MY opinion) is not really anywhere as bad as many of the people on here are saying, other reviewers from other magazines and newspapers have rated this album as a 4 out of 5 as a minimum.Music is a subjective thing and what is one man's meat will be another man's poison.I like the album in general, particularly Half the Truth and Tomato in the Rain. And although their lyrics might not be "deep" they are a great band to hear live and the crowd always loves them. Personally, I don't want to go to a festival and be depressed by a band, I go for a good time, and I have not yet been dissappointed. As far as the comments made about not being able to play their instruments, they are more than capable and more so than a lot of people in the music industry at the moment. Not sure why people are so willing to bash

M1keyBoi

Dec 11, 2008

"KAISER CHIEFS, WANK WANK WANK" is a song I heard not so long ago. They will start wearing tweed next, drive some volvos around and have an unhealthy interest in Bill Oddie

edibleglitter

Dec 14, 2008

'Employment' was my favourite album for ages, probably how I got into indie, and music generally aged 13, I still love it, but 'Yours Truly Angry Mob' never quite lived up the great debut sadly. Haven't heard this album yet but I can believe that maybe its not so special, seems a shame and I don't like slating bands...but maybe they'll get better later...who knows...
