Babyshambles man defies smoking ban on NME/Radio1 Stage

Pete Doherty flouted the UK smoking ban during Babyshambles' headline set on the NME/Radio 1 Stage at Leeds Festival tonight (August 23).

Doherty and guitarist Mik Whitnall frequently sparked up cigarettes during the band's hour-long set, which was delayed for ten minutes and was watched by a half-full tent of delirious fans.

The ban on smoking in public places in the UK came into force in July 2007, and includes tents at festivals.

Opening with 'Carry On Up The Morning', the band's set was heavy on tracks from their 2007 album 'Shotters Nation', including 'Baddie's Boogie', 'Unstookietitled' and the single 'Delivery'.

Singles 'Killamangiro' and 'Fuck Forever' sparked riotous scenes amongst fans, while Doherty dedicated the aforementioned 'Unstookietitled' to black civil rights activist Marcus Garvey.

'Albion' was later dedicated to the memory of Daniel Squires, a 16-year-old fan who Doherty befriended and played at the wake of after his death from bone marrow cancer.

"He's sadly no longer with us," Doherty said.

The song's lyrics were changed in customary fashion, with mentions of Sheffield and Wakefield reflecting the gig's Yorkshire setting.

Doherty then jumped into the photopit at the close of the song to collect hats from fans, which he then proceeded to pile on his head.

Babyshambles played:

'Carry On Up The Morning'
'Delivery'
'Beg, Steal Or Borrow'
'Baddie's Boogie'
'Side Of The Road'
'Unstookietitled'
'Killamangiro'
'Sedative'
'Pipedown'
'I Wish'
'The Blinding'
'Albion'
'Fuck Forever'

Is this really news??I watched the gig. The fact he got fags out is the best thing to report about??It should also be mentioned they also played an amazing set and it looked like Pete knew what was going on (for once). Easily worth missing Rage for!!!

'The band's hour-long set... was watched by a half-full tent of delirious fans.'I disagree - the music was pretty tight and Pete looked more or less fully in control. The tent was packed and the crowd were fully behind the band and were hanging on Pete's every word. Definitely better than straining to see/hear Rage on the Main Stage.

ThBabyshambles gig was brilliant and they played a blistering set to a "packed out tent", the crowd thoroughly enjoyed it and Pete looked to have it all together on stage.....just a pity people have to focus on the negatives !

Again, focusing on the bad points about Pete. I notice how you don't print about the atmosphere and the unreal stage presence that made Babyshambles one of the best acts to play at Leeds.

I agree, it's not really news. Let's face it, we've all seen loads of acts smoke on stage. I think in Pete's big list of illegal acts this is somewhere near the bottom.

As I see it performers can be exempt from the smoking ban as they can claim it is an integral part of their performance. This loophole is there mainly for plays in theatres where a character can be allowed to smoke on stage. Not sure of the exact details of the loophole, but feel free to look it up.Pete Doherty is a legend and his nicotine addiction is the least of our worries. Maybe he wouldn't have such a problem with substance abuse if his stress levels weren't increased by the constant haranguing by the witch-hunters otherwise known as the tabloid press!Exx
